I had the privilege of spending a little time in downtown Indy with the Brackett Family. He was featured on the cover of this month’s Indy’s Child Magazine. I walked away from the session saying, “Wow.”

His beautiful wife, Ragan, is finishing medical school specializing in emergency medicine. His daughter, Gabrielle, is just as cute as a button. They’re expecting their second child in a few weeks… and HE’S IN THE NFL!

How do they do it?!

Of course, that doesn’t include the countless hours spent working with his foundation and fulfilling all the other responsibilities that come from being a pro sports athlete!

Family time is treasured, of course. I was happy to document a glimpse of it:

It’s not to often I have the privilege of working with my own kids. I had a session with Lydia last week in honor of her 5th birthday. The inspiration for this session came from a family heirloom– a crocheted bedspread that my great-grandmother had made. I wanted the session to be natural and sunlit and pensive (although I did get plenty of fun shots for our family album!). I spent 9.99 on a dress from the clearance rack at GAP, and tied some wildflowers in her hair from the tiny field across from our home. Concept sessions don’t have to cost a fortune!

Do you know that Bruce Springsteen song?

She called me the night before their session. “I know where I want to have our pictures taken! The fair!” Molly of Molly Bea Photography loves color so I thought it was a fabulous choice for her regardless of the fact that “everybody in town’ll be there!”

We had a big weekend planned in Michigan. The reason for my visit was a wedding I was second shooting with her. We decided to fit in family pictures for each of us as well.

So upon my arrival in Michigan, we headed over to the good ole’ Gratiot County Fair, took the Wickes’ family pictures, woke up the next morning and took my family’s pictures and then shot the wedding in the afternoon. Whew. Exhausting but so fun.

They may just be one of the cutest families on the planet.

I love working with backlight. Depending on the angle of my camera, it can take many different forms.
